Days 1–6: Fiji
This self-guided vacation begins with four days on Fiji’s largest isle, Viti Levu, where you’ll settle in at the 4-star Sonisali Island Resort. A lagoon surrounds the resort and extends into the ocean, where guests can swim, canoe, or snorkel amid the Pacific’s vibrant coral, sea turtles, and tropical fish. After dark, native Fijians perform ceremonial firewalking and meke dances on the beach.
While you’re here, consider a day trip to see the rest of Viti Levu. About 45 minutes south of the resort, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes reach elevations of 150 feet and were the site of significant archaeological digs. Nadi, one of Fiji’s biggest cities, is less than a half hour north of the hotel by car. While you’re there, shop for native J. Hunter black pearls while walking down Main Street, or sample classic Fijian seafood to the sounds of live music.<p>
Days 7–14: New Zealand’s South Island
A short flight takes you to Christchurch, New Zealand, where you’ll pick up your rental car or camper van. If you’re in a camper van, you’re free to explore New Zealand at your leisure over the next 8 days. If you’ve selected one of the rental-car options, you’ll cruise westward through the patchwork green Canterbury Plains en route to your next stop, Twizel. The drive takes you past several picturesque landmarks, including Lake Tekapo, which reflects the image of New Zealand’s tallest peak, Mount Cook.
Afterwards, you’ll spend three nights in Queenstown, a resort town overlooking Lake Wakatipu. The alpine setting lends itself to skydiving and bungee jumping. Next, you’ll check into accommodations in Hokitika and take in the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, which are surrounded by an unspoiled landscape of waterfalls and rainforests.
An overnight stay in Christchurch marks your last day in New Zealand, with a little free time to ride the Christchurch Gondola for bird’s-eye views of the city’s many parks, lakes, and South Pacific beaches.<p>
