Style trends are tricky beasts. By nature, they can't really be boxed in or marked by a rigid set of rules. And the twists and flairs people put on them make it even more confusing to someone like me, a layman when it comes to fashion trends.
Boho chic definitely fits this bill. But what is it, exactly? How do people view it? What clothing items "go with" it? Why is it so popular at Coachella? To find out, I surveyed Groupon's style editors.
Do you know boho chic when you see it?
The first question I wanted answered was pretty simple: do people know what this style looks like on sight? Fashion is about looks, after all. And it seems that when it comes to the boho style, it is pretty easy to catch:

Only a couple coworkers of mine said they either wouldn't or might be able to recognize boho-chic clothing when they saw it. So we're making ground in pinning this style down: we know it is distinct.
How do people define it?

Next, I wanted to get some data that was more subjective: how do people sum up the style in a sentence or two? Here are some of our editors' more discerning responses:
"Fringe, feathers, crochet, and head jewelry combine for a put-together hippie look."
"Eclectic pairing of items that don't naturally go together but still work and look polished."
"'Bohemian' styles like peasant dresses, floppy hats, etc with more high-end items to create a look that feels both casual and classy."
"With its mixture of flowy tops, maxi dresses, braids, and floppy hats, it's basically a trendy form of laid back dressing."
"Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 2005, wearing flowy layers, lots of fringe, layers of necklaces and bracelets, and carrying a large satchel that (tragically) does not contain a party sub."
A couple themes start to emerge: hippie influences, flowing layers, a sort of rustic style, and, sadly, zero party subs.
What clothing typifies boho chic?
To get a little more specific, I asked our editors to look at a list of items and choose the ones they thought exemplified boho clothing. The results were pretty conclusive here as well: seven items were identified as being boho chic by at least 70% of those surveyed.

So if you're looking to put together a boho-chic look that truly embodies the style, a maxi skirt paired with a flowy top, a floppy-brim hat, some big shades, a chunky bracelet, and sandals would be a good way to go.
Is it seasonal?

According to the poll data, the answer isn't quite as cut and dry as the others, but it still provides some good insight.

Most think of boho chic as a warm-weather style. Perhaps that's why the style is ubiquitous at summertime music fests like Coachella and Lollapalooza—its breezy, comfortable pieces naturally lend themselves to all-day, warm-weather outdoor parties. But a sizable chunk of respondents didn't think it belonged boxed into any season at all. So feel free to break out a breezy top during an atypically warm fall day, or add a frilled vest as an accent to a wintertime outfit.
