Braided Hairstyles for Your Next Blowout

BY: Colleen Loggins |Oct 31, 2017

We're so used to leaving a hair salon with a bouncy blowout that getting one almost feels like part of a routine, and not anything special. So the next time you get your hair done, instead of falling back on the familiar blowout, ask your stylist to give you something fun and a little different—a cute braid.

To give you some inspiration, we asked two of our merchant-partner salons to walk us through some of the braided hairstyles they've created for real clients. Here are some looks you should immediately have your stylist copy. Major hair-goddess points if you can do them yourself.

Messy French-Braid Bun

Designed by Shannon at Jon Charles Salon in Minneapolis

"I created this look by braiding from the bottom up, pulling out the braid as I went [and] finishing with some fun messy buns!"

Sleek Blowout with Side-by-Side Braids

"The first braid started as a French braid coming across the top of her head, then kind of cascading down and to the side, eventually into the ends of her hair. We then added another braid to the side, but this time we did a fishtail just to mix it up."

Tip: Your elastic shouldn't be the focus here, so pick elastics that will blend into your hair—black for dark hair, clear for lighter hair.

Half-Crown French Fishtail

"I sectioned out where we wanted the braid (the bang section), clipped back the hair not needed for the braid, and went to work. I finished off by pinning it underneath the hair, which makes the remaining hair cascade over it."

Crown Braid Messy Bun

"I created this look by braiding around the head, pulling out the braid as I went. [I left] out the hair in the middle to put into a bun."

Loose Braid

Designed by Anline at Jon Charles Salon

"I created this braid by taking quite a big section of hair mostly around the crown/back of the head and loosely braiding it to show the dimension in the color."

Tip: Secure your braided hairstyles with hair paste instead of an elastic if you want them to look undone.

Pulled-Out Dutch Microbraids

Designed by Jessica at Jon Charles Salon

"I started by making a deep side part and clipping away hair unneeded for braids. Starting at the hairline, [I made] two Dutch braids side by side and gently pulled apart the braids, creating a bigger braided look. [I pinned] both braids underneath hair in the back of the head and teased the crown to create volume and to hide the pinning."

Half-Crown Braid with Fishtail

"I created this braid by starting with two normal braids on each side of the part and joining them in the back, then turning it in a fishtail braid to finish it off."

"I created this braid by taking a section on each side of the part, doing a normal braid, and joining them together in the back in a twist."

"The waterfall braid is like a French braid with strands falling out like a waterfall" – owner Naz Ahmadi

Tip: Learning how to braid hair isn't hard, but it does take some practice and plenty of video tutorials before you can do a waterfall braid or French braid your hair in 90 seconds.
