Since 2012, Houston Zoo has undergone a seasonal transformation that has quickly become a Houston holiday tradition: Zoo Lights. We'll tell you what this event is, when it starts, and why you ought to go.
What is Houston Zoo Lights? Presented by TXU Energy, Houston Zoo Lights covers the 55-acre park in LED lights (15 miles worth of them) and illuminates them after sundown. While the animals are taking their nightly nap, you'll see animal-themed lighting displays, a holiday train, and an area dedicated to Texas.
What are Houston Zoo Lights prices and hours? It depands on the year and event. For more information (when available), consult the calendar here.
Why You Should Visit Houston Zoo Lights
You'll see the Houston Zoo in a completely new light.
Visitors already dig the zoo's park-like grounds, highlighted by its nearly centuries-old oak trees. During Zoo Lights, the zoo radiates with new colors and whimsical displays.
It's a family-friendly activity for the holidays.
Kids'll dig the riding the Wildlife Carousel at night and talking to "Candy," Zoo Lights's peppermint-striped interactive zebra. Do your kids like to dance? They can boogie down in the usual chimpanzee viewing area, which will be turned in a "Holiday Disco." We've also heard rumors that—on select nights—a certain rotund gentleman from the North Pole will be making an appearance.
You can snack on holiday-themed treats.
Like hot cocoa and s'mores. Plus all sorts of snacks from the Cypress Circle Café and Texas-style BBQ from a nightly food truck.
It's environmentally friendly.
The Zoo puts up LED lights, which use 85% less energy than incandescent lights. Plus, the Zoo will accept their guests' unwanted holiday lights so that they can be properly recycled.
