Most resorts are designed so you never have to leave them. But if you want to get the most out of your Punta Cana vacation, we recommend tearing yourself away from the pool for a while to experience everything the Dominican Republic has to offer beyond the walls of your hotel. These five Punta Cana excursions will introduce you to the region's unique culture and natural landscape, from its historic architecture to its breathtaking flora and fauna.

Ride Horseback Through the Hills and Beaches

Imagine yourself galloping down pristine beaches on your trusty steed, the gentle ocean waves lapping on one side, and a line of palm trees shading your path on the other. Several ranches in the area can make that dream a reality with knowledgeable guides and well-behaved horses. Some of them will even pick you up and drop you off, making it simple to have a day of equestrian bliss in paradise.

Explore Historic (and Miraculous) Cathedrals

You can get a deeper sense of the history and culture of the Dominican Republic in one of the fastest-developing cities on the island: Higüey. There, you'll find the nearly 450-year-old Church of San Dionisio, known for its Spanish colonial architecture, baroque altars, and two-story bell tower. Nearby sits the more modern La Altagracia Cathedral, which is one of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana. Thousands of visitors make a pilgrimage every January due to its supposed ability to heal people.

Swim, Eat, and Spelunk at Off-the-Beaten-Path Beaches

Not far from the busy resorts are two stunning beaches: Playa Macao and Boca de Yuma. At Macao, you can lie back on the sand or swim in the blue waters before enjoying seafood cooked right on the beach. The more epicurious beachgoer can check out nearby rum, chocolate, and cigar producers for an intoxicating taste of local flavor.

For more elbow room, head to the uncrowded beaches in the small village of Boca de Yuma. In addition to breathtaking views, you'll also find a host of caves, such as the Cave of Bernard, that are perfect for spelunkers.

Zipline Above Tropical Forestry and Dive into a Lagoon

Ziplining has to be one of the most popular Punta Cana excursions there is. Attached to the Farallon Cliff, the 8-zipline course at Hoyo Azul Lagoon goes as high as 250 feet above the Cap Cana forests. You'll see countless trees, suspension bridges, and maybe even some wildlife as you whir from platform to platform at up to 40mph. Afterward, you can unwind in the natural lagoon below, nicknamed "The Blue Hole" for its striking turquoise water.

Go on a Nature Excursion

With 1,500 acres of protected coastal and inland habitats, Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve—home to over 100 species of birds, insects, and plants—is a must-visit for nature lovers. Guided tours take you through 12 freshwater lagoons, the park's botanical and fruit gardens, and a petting zoo. There's even an iguana farm for reptile fans.
