5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Wisconsin Dells this Winter

When most families think of Wisconsin Dells, they picture a summer vacation filled with water parks, boat rides, and other warm-weather attractions. But the colder months bring just as many opportunities for family fun, both indoors and out. Below, we compiled five reasons why you might want to switch your summer trip to a mid-winter getaway.

Indoor waterslides are just as fun.

Wisconsin Dells often boasts of its status as the “Waterpark Capital of the World”, but it doesn’t hang up its crown once the leaves start to fall. Big name resorts such as Mt. Olympus, Great Wolf Lodge, and Chula Vista Resort all feature some of the best indoor water parks in Wisconsin Dells—and they stay open all year. And since you’ll be visiting in the off season, chances are the lines for the slides will be a lot shorter. Added bonus: no need to slather on sunscreen.

Kids will love: Kalahari Indoor Theme Park the largest, and arguably best, indoor waterpark in Wisconsin Dells, presents families with 125,000 square feet of attractions, including an indoor theme park with a six-story ferris wheel, African-themed carousel, and high-ropes course.

Grownups will love: Steaming hot tubs abound for those who need a break from the sliding and splashing.

Skiing and tubing are more fun in winter.

Believe it or not, skiing in Wisconsin is… well, a thing! In fact, the state has the third-most skiing and snowboard resorts in the country. Near Wisconsin Dells, you’ll find snowy attractions, such as Cascade Mountain and Christmas Mountain Village, that offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing opportunities for the whole family. Just don’t forget your snow shoes.

Kids will love: Cyber tubing, Christmas Mountain’s new down-hill attraction, which combines snow tubing with upbeat music and color-changing LED lights.

Grownups will love: Saving money. Kids 12 and under can ski for free while accompanied by a paying adult at Cascade Mountain.

You can plan a full day of activities without leaving your resort.

Sure, there are plenty of winter-time attractions to explore outside your hotel, but you might find just as many inside it. Resorts like Great Wolf Lodge boast so many different activities and attractions that you could have a full day of fun without ever putting on a coat. Besides its signature indoor water park, the resort boasts an arcade, a full spa, shops, shows, daily appearances by costumed characters, pajama parties for kids, and tons of other family-friendly activities.

Kids will love: MagiQuest, a live-action adventure game, which allows kids to explore the lodge as an enchanted kingdom with pixies, dragons, hidden treasures, and more.

Grownups will love: A romantic dinner of wood-fired steaks and fresh seafood at the Lodge Wood Fired Grill, followed by a refreshing massage at the Elements Spa Salon.

The scenery is even more beautiful when dusted with snow.

Summertime tours of Wisconsin Dells focus mainly on water travel and include Dells Army Duck Tours, Dells Boat Tours, and Jet Boat Adventures. But once the snow hits the ground, the area turns into a woodsy winter wonderland that’s best viewed by land (or air!). Try a tour on horseback or book an adrenaline-fueled ride with the famous BigFoot Zipline Tours, both activities that are available year-round.

Kids will love: Woodside Ranch’s year-round petting zoo and horse-drawn sleigh rides through the snow.

Grownups will love: Soaring over the snow-dusted red-pine and white-oak forest surrounding Sasquatch Lake while zipping to, from, and over Bigfoot Island on the largest zipline tour Wisconsin Dells offers.

Wisconsin Dells’ holiday shows are truly magical.

If you don’t favor the snow or the cold weather, maybe wintertime shines most for you when the holidays roll around. While Wisconsin Dells offers live entertainment and theater performances year round, November and December are the months to visit if you love a good holiday-themed show.

The whole family will love:  Singing along to Christmas songs with live performances at Crystal Grand Music Theatre, or catching a holiday-themed musical, such as Miracle on 34th Street or A Christmas Carol, at the state-of-the-art Palace Theater.
