GROUPON GUIDE TO OKLAHOMA-CITY

TV Travel: The Walking Dead

Walking Dead Atlanta Skyline jpgIf you’re planning a trip to the Atlanta area, there are some no-brainer attractions you’ll want on your itinerary: the World of Coca-Cola, the Fox Theatre, and the square of sidewalk where Sheree Whitfield attempted to snatch the wig off Kim Zolciak’s head on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, to name a few. But if you’re a Walking Dead die-hard (pun intended), you’ll probably want to make a pilgrimage to some of the real-life locations featured on the zombie-apocalypse survival series—which, by the way, returns for its sixth season on AMC Sunday, October 11.

A. Harrison Memorial Hospital | 2370 Bolton Rd. NW, Atlanta

One of the first and most important Walking Dead filming locations is the abandoned hospital where sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakens from a coma to find a world overrun with zombies. In real life, the building used for those scenes is the headquarters of the Atlanta Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting homelessness.

B. Goat Farm Arts Center | 1200 Foster St., Atlanta

Walking Dead Goat Farm jpgThis crumbling brick complex, used as a performing arts center in real life, served as the site of a showdown between walkers and survivors in the Season 1 episode “Vatos.”

C. Cobb Energy Center | 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy., Atlanta

Walking Dead CDC jpgOn The Walking Dead, the ever-important Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is played by the Cobb Energy Center, a performing arts space on the north side of the city. (The CDC almost never allows films and TV shows to use footage of its actual exterior.)

D. Jackson Street Bridge | 201, 211 Jackson St. NE, Atlanta

The most iconic view of Atlanta on The Walking Dead was captured right here. It’s a great place to get your own shot of the skyline, whether or not you’re a fan of the show.

E. Esco Feed Mill | 23 Line Creek Rd., Senoia

Drive about an hour south of downtown Atlanta to find the old mill featured in the show’s opening credits. It’s also been used as a location for several shootouts and a rendezvous or two.

F. Woodbury | 1 Main St., Senoia

G. Woodbury Arena | 5 Perry St., Newnan

The super-creepy spot where walkers are pitted against each other in gladiatorial combat for the entertainment of Woodbury survivors is on private property owned by a company called Caldwell Tanks. For an up-close look, book a Walking Dead guided tour.
