China Peak, Shaver Lake

Even at its high elevation, China Peak Mountain Resort still sits in the shadow of slopes that extend skyward for 1,600 feet. The resort's team members like to think of themselves as stewards of their 1,300 acres of forested terrain, which is why they implement eco-friendly practices such as fostering the growth of native vegetation and controlling the effects of erosion.

The result is a pristine landscape that hosts outdoor activities year-round. Winter sports are, of course, the highlight, with seven chairlifts and a giant, docile yeti ferrying skiers and snowboarders up the snowy slopes. In addition to terrain parks and runs for skiers of all levels, the area features a tubing hill and, in the warmer months, plenty of trails for hiking and biking.
