About Bronx Jiu-Jitsu

Brothers John and Juan Ortega grew up in the neighborhood where they now teach as the instructors and owners of Bronx Jiu-Jitsu. As kids, martial arts gave them discipline, confidence, and the tools they needed to stand up to bullies. With those memories in mind, they founded a school in their old neck of the woods as a way to pass on their lessons to another local generation.

The Ortegas teach a combination of kids' and adult classes, focusing on two iterations of jujitsu from different parts of the world. Brazilian jujitsu arms its disciples with a broad range of ground-fighting techniques, good for overpowering a larger opponent or winning a fistfight with the sandman. Japanese jujitsu focuses on fighting from a standing position with strikes, joint locks, and even some weapon techniques. To condition students for the rigors of combat, the brothers also conduct cardio kickboxing classes and kettlebell courses.

Overall it provided me with a reasonably good experience despite several shortcomings. First, the facility does not have any showers to use after training. Hence, I had to endure a 30 minute train ride home covered in sweat. Second, certain members of the school would bring their children to classed with them which could often be a distraction. I understand that procuring childcare is not always easy but at all the other schools I trained at such as Brooklyn Martial Arts and Clockwork this issue never arose. There were even times the head instructor would have to tell the children to be quiet due to them making too much noise. Lastly, if you buy this class card to have to be proactive about making sure you get each of your 5 classes. There is no punch card nor anyway to formally keep track of how many classes you use. I only used four classes and when it came time to use the fifth I was told I had already used it. This was not possible because the class that was allegedly my last one (a Saturday nogi class) never even took place! To make matters worse the head instructor told me to speak to the desk attendant who had no clue what had happened and only offered me a membership with a contract? Common business sense would make it clear that if a customer was not pleased with how a business handles a 5 class pass, that customer would not invest more money on a monthly basis with that same business. But I guess the owner does not posses much common business sense. Also when compared to the head instructors at Clockwork and Brooklyn Martial arts, the owner (Coach Junior) is not nearly as personable or helpful and never really provided me with any useful BJJ related tips or advice. All in all, this is not the worse place to train but compared to the numerous other BJJ schools in the city, many of whom have passes available on Groupon, this school ranks low on list. Proceed with caution but proceed in another direction if you want the best experience possible. Specifically, Brooklyn Martial Arts, Renzo Gracie Astoria, International Training Center and of course Clockwork Bjj or numerous other establishments.
