The meal was delicious. Our cook was quiet, but funny. We had so much food that we had enough for 2 meals for 4 people the next day!

I had a part of four arriving around 8pm Friday night. The hibachi grills were busy but the was plenty of room if we opted for hibachi. Instead, we chose to be seated for sushi. We were greeted warmly and promptly. Overall, the four star rating is for the service and atmosphere. Although the server seemed inexperienced she made up for it with an eagerness to make us happy. She was unaware of the contents of a monster roll, unfamiliar with the basic components on our "Love Boat", and appeared to be unfamiliar with the menu in order to make recommendations. Regarding the food: we ordered the "Love Boat", a Philadelphia roll, miso soup and salad. The miso soup was good. I would have preferred it served in a ceramic bowl. I don't like eating from a plastic bowl and spoon. The salad was cold and crispy with some sort of creamy ranch dressing. Definitely not a traditional ginger dressing but not unpleasant. Unfortunately, I didn't think the dressing complemented the miso soup or prepared our palate for sushi. The creamy dressing was a distraction as was the complimentary tortilla chips and plum sauce served before our order was taken. The Philadelphia roll was served well before our sushi boat. . .awkward. The sushi boat arrived without explanation. The boat itself was worse from wear and appeared to be missing some of its decorative parts. The sushi appeared fresh and the composition was average. We were hungry, we ate, we were warmly thanked for our patronage and we left. With so many other very good sushi restaurants in Kalamazoo, we have no reason to return to Kyoto restaurant on West Main.
