"Food of Nations" reads the sign above the entryway at Kalustyan's, and if anything, that's an understatement. A mainstay of New York's food scene since 1944, the market specializes in Indian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern ingredients but boasts items from more than 75 countries, including Turkey, Armenia, Israel, and Lebanon. Within its walls, customers can browse hundreds of chutneys, dozens of olive varieties, dried and preserved seafood products from nam pla to escargot, and almost 150 kinds of pickles. Martha Stewart even called the store "one of my favorite places to shop for unique spices and hard-to-find ingredients." But New York Magazine may have best worded the joy of browsing through this shop: "[Kaluystan's is] the Willy Wonka of imported goods."
