Brown's Harvest, Windsor

It all began in 1871, when James M. Brown purchased the original home farm near the old Poquonock Town Hall. Back then, Brown's crop of choice was tobacco, and he was so good at it, he had to employ four carriages to peddle his cigars all over Connecticut. A gift for growing and gardening just runs through the Brown family, which has kept Brown's Harvest flourishing across six generations. And though the times, and the crops, may have changed throughout the decades, the charm of the farm has only gotten stronger. Here's what to expect from your jaunt through Brown's Harvest.

• The Activities: For 39 years in a row, Spring and Fall have treated kids to fun and educational tractor-drawn hay rides (which often feature an appearance by Spookley the Square Pumpkin). Weekends often feature festivities such as a six-acre corn maze and a special kids' corn maze, which is perfect for birthday parties, group events, or those days when you just wanna wander in a corn maze.
• The Fruits and Veggies: Load up on fresh, GMO-free veggies and berries, including seasonal items such as springtime strawberries and peas, summer sweet corn, and autumnal pumpkins, gourds, mums, cider, and even cider doughnuts.
• Other Tasty Treats: The farm offers fresh baked goods, local honey, ice cream, Avery Gross sodas, and Hosmer Mountain Root Beer.
