What is Bundling with Priceline?

Bundling a trip means purchasing the flight, hotel, and/or rental car in a single transaction, instead of booking each separately. Priceline creates a vacation package to sell all the services at one bundled rate, and the discounts really do carry some weight. It was revealed in a Bloomberg analysis that Priceline customers unwittingly left nearly $60 million on the table in a single year by booking a flight first and a hotel later, one of the most common booking patterns.

Bundling Vs. Individual Packages 

Join us on a hypothetical trip from Los Angeles to Chicago, from December 20 to 27. We chose the same hotel for both the bundle and the separate bookings. For the flight and the rental car, we picked the lowest-priced option and have broken down the cost of each item. 

The total cost of this trip for 1 traveler comes to $2,713. A bundle including the same flight, stay at the same hotel in Chicago, and a rental car costs 1 traveler $2,356—that’s a savings of $357 or a 13% discount.

Here are a few scenarios where bundling your trip might not be the way to go:

• If you don’t need all three services (flight, hotel, rental car), your savings won’t be as noticeable if you only book two 
• If you belong to a loyalty program for certain airlines, hotels, or car rental services with better rewards
• Fair warning: When you bundle travel bookings, cancellation can become more difficult. You will typically not be able to cancel with the individual airline, hotel, or car rental service. And free cancellation doesn’t always mean you’ll receive a refund.
