Bose traces its roots back to the MIT campus in the 1950s. With his rigorous coursework behind him, grad student Dr. Amar G. Bose decided to treat himself to a new home-stereo system. The sound quality, however, was disappointing, so Dr. Bose put his scientific knowledge to the task of creating his own speakers.

This led to the founding of Bose in 1964. Four years before the launch of the 901 Direct/Reflecting speaker, which combined reflected and direct sound to simulate the aural sensations of a live musical performance. Now the companies history includes the first noise-canceling headphones for pilots and airline passengers to factory-installed sound systems tailored to specific automobiles. Such technological leaps earned the late Dr. Bose a spot in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2008.
