How Peruvian Connection Started

Not many clothing companies can trace their roots back to an anthropological study, but that's precisely the case with Peruvian Connection. It started in 1976 when Annie Hurlbut, then 19 years old, traveled to Peru to research the women who sell their wares in the Andean markets. She immediately fell in love with the women's handmade alpaca-wool garments. The only problem was, the sweaters they made weren't very fashionable by Western standards. She helped the Peruvian women revamp their designs and returned with samples, along with an alpaca-wool sweater coat as a birthday gift for her mother, Biddy. She was just as taken by the unique garment, and the two began importing the luxuriously soft sweaters into the United States to sell.

The business spread from their hometown of Tonganoxie, Kansas to New York, where the mother-daughter duo brought their freshly printed catalog, along with some samples. Their wares caught the attention of a New York Times writer, who requested an interview with Annie in 1979. Three months after publication, Peruvian Connection received 5,000 catalog requests. Annie and Biddy continue to import the same alpaca and cotton garments today, along with handmade ponchos, dresses, and other clothes made by skilled Andean artisans.
