Popular at woodsman and timbersports competitions, the sport's history is hard to trace exactly, but there's certainly no harm in imagining yourself as a medieval warrior (or a lumberjack). Grab a battle axe and aim for the bull's eye in a friendly competition.

An "axe-pert" coach will show you different techniques and ways to safely throw the axe—they might even show you some trick shots. After ensuring that everyone can throw safely, the coaches will start the game off and let you test your aim against others.

➤ Safety

Safety is the main priority here, which is why a team of experienced axe coaches constantly watches over the players. The lanes are separated by metal fences. Closed-toed shoes are required.

➤ Friendly competition

Your group will have a guaranteed time slot, but you may have a chance to compete with another group throwing at the same time. Each time slot gets two targets so don't worry about it getting too crowded.

• Must be 13 or older.
• Younger than 18 must have a guardian-signed waiver.
