For seniors struggling on a fixed income, health problems, other emergencies, and the daily cost of living can make it difficult to sustain a sufficient food budget. Maintaining an adequate diet can also be a concern for home-bound seniors who cannot shop for themselves and those unable to prepare their own meals. Delivered meals not only help people remain in their homes and get quality nutrition, they also foster a sense of dignity and independence in elderly people recovering from illness or who live alone.

Alameda County Meals on Wheels, a collaboration of six area Meals on Wheels programs, delivers warm meals to more than 2,200 Alameda County seniors each delivery day. In addition to offering a source of regular nutrition, the visits represent the only human contact many isolated seniors experience in a day, providing them with companionship, a link to the outside world, and regular contact in case of emergency. Although the organization is able to make every bit of funding count—it can feed one senior for an entire year for roughly the cost of a single day in the hospital—government funding covers only half the cost of preparing and delivering meals, making private donations vital.
