The expression "behind the 8 ball" can apply to many of life's obstacles, from facing a traffic-court judge to accidentally baking your car keys into a pie. Sink problems into the corner pocket with today's Groupon: for $25, you get $50 worth of pool, ping-pong, fare, drinks, and more at Amsterdam Billiards located near Union Square on the corner of Eleventh Street and Fourth Avenue.
Named the Best Pool Hall in New York by New York magazine, Amsterdam Billiards offers tabled entertainment in the form of pool, ping-pong, and foosball in addition to a full-service bar and a classic bar-food menu. Improve your pool game ($5.50–$8.50 per person, per hour) to hustle naïve nuns while snacking on European-style flatbread pizza topped with fresh basil, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese ($11.50) and knocking back glasses of Domaine Lafond Cotes du Rhone ($8.50). Grab a couple of boneless buffalo wings ($11.50) to busy left hands as their compatriots fling darts, or treat noses to an aromatic pint of Blue Moon ($6.50) while eyes gaze lovingly at 20 plasma TV screens.
Inside this old-fashioned billiard hall, brick walls, oil paintings, and plush oriental rugs mute the sounds of ricocheting stripes and solids so you can focus your energy on having fun as opposed to whittling pool sticks into ear plugs. Bring your sewing circle or fantasy football team in to enjoy a night of four-pocketed excitement.
Reviews
Amsterdam Billiards is a New York magazine critics’ pick. CitySearchers give Amsterdam Billiards a 4.5-star average and Yelpers give it a three-star average:
- Great tables, great staff, good ambience and you can see some of the best players in the world. It is a little pricy, however you get what you pay for. This sort of place will help pool shed its shady reputation. – Trevor H., Yelp
- Every time my friends and I go to Amsterdam Billiards (which is pretty often), they make us feel right at home. The staff are lovely, lively and engaging, and they know how to make good customers feel welcome. It's almost as much fun to watch their lineup of resident professional world-class pool players as it is to play on one of their many well-conditioned full-size tables. – SeaHorse138, CitySearch

About Amsterdam Billiards and Bar
Inside this old-fashioned billiard hall, brick walls, oil paintings, and plush rugs mute the sounds of ricocheting stripes and solids. Amsterdam Billiards has five forms of table entertainment, but pool reigns supreme—25 Brunswick tables cover the space in rectangles of green, and in 2010, the hall was named the Best Pool Hall in New York by New York magazine.
However, the hall also has ping-pong tables, a foosball table, three pinball machines, and a light-up beer pong table. Between games of their choice, guests can sidle up to the zinc bar for a glass of wine, a bucket of beer, or some old-school bar bites. If you'd rather watch a game than play, then simply look at one of the 17 flatscreen televisions, or ask one of the dart players if you can caddy for them.
