About Arepera Guacuco
When Leonardo Molina decided to open up a restaurant, he immediately called up his mom in Venezuela. When explaining his thought process to reporters from Bushwick BK, Leonardo quipped, “what’s better than mom’s cooking?” Carmen Cabello packed up her suitcases and shipped off to New York, where she now works the griddle at her son’s restaurant, frying up plump, crispy cornmeal arepas. Carmen waits until a customer walks in the door to begin kneading up the cornmeal to ensure absolute freshness, before packing the lightly fried morsels with fresh meats, veggies, and salty cheeses. Once guests are seated at the counters that line the open kitchen, they can sip on cool papelón lemonades with molasses while nibbling on arepas and other traditional Venezuelan dishes, such as meaty empanadas, simmering seafood soups, and sweet fried plantains. They drench their meals in a creamy green sauce, Carmen’s secret creation rumored to contain sprigs of cilantro and spoonfuls of genuine mother’s love. Servers stroll across the tiled floors as they bring out bottles of beer and wine, their faces shining in the sunlight pouring in from towering front windows.
