Q&A with Alicia Brodie, Teacher and Studio Owner
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Bikram yoga is self-motivating; since it is designed to condition every muscle, joint, tendon, and ligament in the body, taking a class makes you feel really good all day. If you practice two or three times a week, you start to feel really good all the time. If you quit, you notice that you don't feel as good anymore, even if you're doing other types of exercise. Most people who quit come back sooner or later because they just feel better when they practice regularly.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
Not exactly, but I do believe that doing nothing will get you nothing. A Bikram yoga class is challenging, and there is a great feeling of personal accomplishment with every class you complete. With regular practice (three times a week is recommended), your body composition changes drastically—you replace fat with muscle. Bikram always says, "In my class you don't lose weight, you lose inches."
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
For a new student, getting used to the heat can be very challenging. It is fine to sit down and take a break at any time. At first it seems like you are not going to be able to make it, but if you just take it one posture at a time and remember to breathe, everyone can make it to the end. The second half of class is all done lying down, so that comes as a big relief. It is also a little surprising how difficult and challenging some very simple-looking postures can be when you hold them for a few seconds. I went into my first class feeling like I was strong and in good shape, especially my legs, and after about 15 minutes, I felt as weak as a kitten, especially my legs. The beauty of Bikram yoga is that the postures adjust to you and your individual level of ability, so that they are both difficult and doable for all fitness levels.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
People are often afraid to try Bikram yoga because of the heated room, but it is important to know that it is totally different from working out on a hot day. The heat in the room is nothing like the heat of the sun, and it actually makes doing the postures easier and safer.
