The Black Hills Caverns first came to the attention of westward-moving settlers in 1882, though the Lakota had long frequented the area. Both peoples found themselves drawn to the remarkable calcite crystal formations found within the caves. These complex, glittering structures often took animal-like forms. Today, the caves remain an attraction, and tours explore up to three levels of the cave, covering almost three quarters of a mile of underground terrain.
