After arriving at the outpost, river runners sign waivers and are issued life vests, paddles, and optional reflective facemasks, the only known protection against the manatee's paralyzing gaze. Canoes can hold three adults or two adults and two children; kayaks can hold one person. Once proudly seated athwart their noble vessels, paddlers will cast off, making the five-mile, two-hour trek downriver to the pick-up point. State designated as "Outstanding Florida Water," the river is teeming with wildlife—visitors often see birds, fish, turtles, and the occasional languid alligator, wistfully dreaming of a successful lawsuit against Lacoste.
