Wakeboarding: Skurfing Safari

Originally called “skurfing,” wakeboarding is much like snowboarding on water. Read on to learn about the elements of the sport.

Wakeboard: Made of foam and coated with fiberglass, wakeboards are smaller than surfboards, a little bigger than skateboards, and very similar to a wider snowboard, complete with bindings to lock wakeboarders’ feet in place. Boards also have fins to slice through the water.

Wake: The V-shaped trail of water produced by a moving boat. Low tow speeds coupled with extra weight in the boat help create big wakes that make for more dramatic tricks such as spins, flips, and jumps.

Towrope: A rope connecting a handle and the wakeboard tower on the towboat, pulling the wakeboarder through the water.

Wakeboard tower: An arch on the back of a towboat normally constructed of steel or aluminum tubing. The pull point—where the towrope connects to the tower—sits about 7 feet above the water.
