As afternoon fades into twilight on Wednesday and Sunday evening, Sea Life Park’s Makapu’u Meadows light up with dramatic demonstrations of Polynesian traditions. Charismatic hosts bestow lei greetings before tutoring luau guests in hula dancing, coconut-leaf headband making, fire making, spear-chucking, and tattooing.
Once guests start to feel like they may have spent a past life on the island, hands-on activities give way to feasting on more than a dozen different Hawaiian dishes. The meal spreads out lomi-lomi salmon, chicken yakitori, kalua pork, pineapple cake, and other island cuisine. After dinner, the comedically gifted Chief Sielu and his tribe’s performers take the ocean-backed stage for a rousing show of fire-knife dancing and South Pacific drumming. Polynesian performer Chief Sielu is on a lifelong quest to educate and entertain the world about Polynesian traditions, a passion that has taken him to appearances on the BBC, MTV, and the Late Show with David Letterman. Dubbed the “Coconut Man,” the chief immerses all comers in island culture at a spectacular luau. On stage, he and his tribe balance revelry and education with high-energy ritual and fire knife-dancing performances, participatory dances, and a large supper of Hawaiian staples such as poi and braised surfboard fillets. If you can catch his ear, Sielu might have a lot of stories to share: in the course of his ambassadorial travels, he’s lit the Olympic torch in Salt Lake City by throwing a flaming spear and been the subject of the film Chief, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
