Scientists agree that children are our future, which is why most children are sealed in time capsules with a flashlight and a stack of magazines. Give a child something he or she will really dig with today's deal: For $45, you get a one-year family membership to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge (a $90 value), located in Oak Ridge. Admission for children under three is free.

The Children's Museum of Oak Ridge has developed into a museum featuring a variety of interactive and educational exhibits, programs, and workshops for all ages. Gain an understanding of frontier life and its inconsistent cell phone reception with the "Appalachian Heritage" exhibit, featuring three re-constructed log houses furnished with authentic 19th century artifacts, or discover the beauty of nature on an observation deck overlooking a simulated Amazon rainforest, complete with sound effects, a waterfall, and a railed walkway. The museum's popular model trains exhibit features a hands-on play room with a mock diesel engine train and town. Children can also pilot a boat through a waterworks exhibit or explore the International Hall, packed with instruments, clothing, and instruments that can be worn as clothing from cultures around the world.

A family membership to the museum includes free admission for parents and children (normally $7 for adults and $5 for children), discounts on admission to museum events, and a 10% discount at the museum store. Members will also receive newsletters and other mailings informing them about upcoming classes and special events. Additionally, members receive discounts on the museum's themed preschool classes with each class incorporating a story, a snack, and an activity, much like the annual Nobel Prize Award Ceremony.

About Children's Museum of Oak Ridge

Founded in 1973 as a Girl Scout project, the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge first opened inside Jefferson Junior High School with little more than 2,000 square feet of rented space to its name. After a meteoric rise in popularity, the museum moved to its current 54,000-square-foot facility, which brims with more than 20 educational and interactive exhibits designed to help children learn and grow.

Children and parents can explore a simulated Amazonian rainforest, which reverberates with jungle sounds in air thick and heavy with moisture from the running waterfall. Little tykes become little tycoons in the World of Trains, which features a full-size Norfolk Southern caboose and a hands-on playroom where children adopt the role of conductor, steering tiny locomotives and apologizing to their peers when their toy train doesn’t arrive on schedule. Otherwise, they can educate themselves on the history of playthings with some of the most impressive and entertaining gizmos from the museum's collection in the Century of Toys exhibit. Static exhibits aren't all the venue has to offer; the staff often organizes events such as performances by storytellers and controlled playtime with live monkeys.
