Although many little girls dream of becoming ballerinas, most give up the ambition when they hear rumors about the surgically implanted titanium toes the profession requires. Gracefully dispel hearsay with today's deal: for $19, you get three adult ballet or hip-hop dance classes from Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy (a $42 value). Adult classes do not require advance registration and take place at two different facilities, which are located downtown and in Blue Ash.
Cincinnati Ballet and its Cincinnati Ballet Academy give students access to expert, professional dance instruction within the confines of top-notch studio space. Under the tutelage of the academy's faculty and dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet, grown-ups can leave their 9-to-5 cares behind using an art form long known to the French as "leg jazz." A beginner-level ballet class caters to those who've managed to go years or even decades without donning a tutu. The classes satisfy anyone looking to make their first exploration of ballet, re-live the pliés and pirouettes of their youth, or finally achieve a fitness goal of scratching their eyebrow with their pinky toe. For dance-doers who have already oiled up their swan costumes and have kept their feet happy on a regular basis, an intermediate/advanced ballet class is also available, with its curriculum tailored to match the skill-set of the student body.
Dancers also can elect to eschew the arch-free footwear and 100-foot leaps of the ballet world for the contemporary curriculum of instructor Kim Popa's hip-hop dance class (currently only available at the downtown studio). During this upbeat course, students can raise their heart rates and pick up a few bustable moves, exponentially increasing the likelihood of being cast in a music video.
Ballet shoes are required for all ballet classes. Aerobic or cross-training sneakers are suitable for hip-hop classes.
Reviews
The New York Times recommends Cincinnati Ballet classes, and more than 2,500 Facebookers like the ballet overall:
- The fiberglass pigs in tutus that greet you outside the Cincinnati Ballet might indicate otherwise, but don’t be fooled: the Ballet’s Open Adult Division program is a great place to get lean. Start your Saturday with a beginning ballet class (90 minutes, $14), as a company member steers novices through basic movements. – Kassie Bracken, NY Times

About Cincinnati Ballet - G1
Founded in 1963 at a local YMCA, the Cincinnati Ballet grew into a major regional company by adhering to its mission to express the human experience through dance. Today, it continues upholding that vision by housing resident artists who entertain audiences with dance performances of both classic and original work. Beyond supporting local audiences and their right to clap, the Cincinnati Ballet also seeks to nurture artists through the Otto M. Budig Academy. There, a professional faculty trains aspiring performers at all skill levels. These training opportunities are supplemented by outreach programs such as CincyDance!, which provides free training and dance attire to children.
