Today's Groupon brings back el deal caliente by demand popular: $15 gets you $30 worth of delicious Mexican food at Colibrí Mexican Bistro, located at 438 Geary St. in the Theater District (one block west of Union Square). Colibrí offers more than the standard Mexican fare, making it a great place to have lunch with friends, dinner with out-of-towners, or a business meeting in which you propose replacing the police force of Old Detroit with Robot Cops.

Colibrí's menu is full of classic Mexican cuisine with a smidgen of Spanish and French influences. Don't miss out on its famous fresh guacamole, prepared tableside and accompanied by soft handmade corn tortillas ($10, add $5 for chips). Avoid the hefty dinner crows by hitting up Colibrí during lunch. Try the ensalada de jicama (jicama with avocado, cilantro, and citrus, $10) or the camarones en mole de tamarindo (sautéed prawns in a tamarind mole sauce, $15). For dinner, the ceviche veracruzano (lime-marinated white fish, $16) is popular, but the chamorro de cordero (marinated lamb shank wrapped in banana leaves and steamed to perfection, $18) and the coliflor capeada (cauliflower with tomato sauce, cheese, roasted poblano strips, and mushrooms, $12) are equally tasty.

Colibrí, which means hummingbird in Spanish, is bold and bright like a hummingbird coming out of a cocoon. The restaurant’s décor immediately brings to mind the festive atmosphere of Old Mexico. Don't miss out a great deal on fantastic food.

What You Need to Know: Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are the only birds that are able to fly backward, but that’s hardly their only interesting trait:

  • They flap their wings 12–90 times a second, depending on the quality of the Frasier repeat they’re watching.
  • They feed on nectar, insects, tossed salad, and scrambled eggs.
  • Their beaks have a characteristic overlap that allows the mandible to fit tightly inside the maxilla, an evolutionary advantage that allows them to switch between episodes of Frasier when more than one is aired simultaneously.
  • Just like Frasier’s picky father, Martin, the hummingbirds can’t ingest certain colored liquids.
  • Before migration, hummingbirds are able to store enough fat to travel non-stop or to watch Frasier non-stop until they see the episode where Daphne finally snaps and uses Frasier’s squash racquet to attack Martin in fever-induced delirium.
