The nonprofit CYT molds children into multifaceted thespians with classes that unveil the theatrical magic behind an array of onstage and backstage topics. Classes convene once a week for two hours, allowing seasoned veterans of the stage to impart their knowledge of theater specialties, including dance, comedy, set design, audition techniques, and synchronized bowing. During Shakespeare/Sword sessions, actors swashbuckle their way through lessons on the use of such stage-combat staples as the foil, épée, and broadsword. Students who sign up for the Broadcast News class write scripts, perform interviews, and even tour a TV station to learn where the weatherman keeps the blindfold and dartboard he uses to determine his predictions.
Up to 90 students congregate in class sizes ranging from 15-20 after school hours at one of the organization's three centers throughout the Tucson area, honing their limelight skills and preparing for a showcase held during their final class in which they can exercise their newfound talents. As a nonprofit organization, CYT devotes itself fully to its goal of teaching accountability to its attendees while working to develop self-esteem, good character, and the ability to find parents in a darkened auditorium. Check the schedule at each location for class descriptions and availability.

About CYT
CYT Tucson immerses kids in a supportive environment that nurtures discipline and self-confidence while instructing the future thespians in the arts of the stage. Their introductory Rising Stars program acquaints children aged 5–7 to the magic of drama through games, dance, and the lesson that emotions can be faked to influence people other than relatives and mall Santas. Older students can enroll in specialized classes and devote their attention to the triple-threat disciplines of singing, dancing, and acting. They may also branch out into specialty courses on such topics as improv and stage fighting. Leading its charges through the production of a fully realized musical, the center also stages several shows, including past productions of Pocahontas and Annie in recent years.
