Visiting an art museum is like traveling through time, only without the existential paradoxes and Morlock bites. Today's Groupon offers beautiful art and no dimensional hopscotching. For $5, you get one general-admission ticket to the Dallas Museum of Art, a $10 value for adults. This Groupon is also good for 20% off purchases from the museum store and the Atrium Café, so you can take a little of the experience home with you in the form of an art book, postcard, or sandwich-full belly. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Founded in 1903, the Dallas Museum of Art houses more than 23,000 works of art in its collections, spanning 5,000 years of human history and featuring works by the likes of Pollock, Picasso, van Gogh, and Monet. The museum is consistently adding new pieces and unveiling new exhibitions, so, much like solving a Sudoku puzzle while a jam band solos in the background, it's never the same experience twice. Current exhibitions include Jacob Lawrence: The Life of Toussaint L'Ouverture, a collection of 15 silkscreen prints exploring the life of Haitian revolutionary L'Ouverture through Lawrence's dramatic and colorful artistry. Special exhibitions may have additional costs, such as The Lens of Impressionism: Photography and Painting Along the Normandy Coast, 1850–1874, which offers a profound convergence of work, including works by such painters as Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet alongside photography from Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, and more. The Dallas Museum of Art also offers late-night events on select dates, as well as live jazz music in the Atrium Café every Thursday night.

The Dallas Museum of Art also offers interactive smARTphone tours for visitors seeking to combine the physical weight of a web-enabled device with the aesthetic heft of thought-provoking art. A limited number of iPod Touches can be checked out from the Visitor Services desk for museum guests who still surf the Internet the old-fashioned way.

Reviews

Frommer's highly recommends the Dallas Museum of Art, and TripAdvisors offer three owl eyes. Yelpers give the cultural destination four stars, and Yahoo! Travelers give 4.5:

  • …the Dallas Museum of Art significantly improved its standing within the art world in 2005 when it received the undeniably world-class modern and contemporary art collections of three prominent local collectors. – Frommer's
  • My favorite sections are the small galleries that seem like you enter a person's home. Each item is placed so that you can see it in context. Every corner seems to reveal a new find that you were not expecting. – lizicat, TripAdvisor
