Jiu-jitsu lends itself well to self-defense because it does not rely on strength or power. In many other martial arts, opponents will defend themselves by striking their opponent. Though this can at times be effective, it is unrealistic to believe that a small female will be able to knock out or incapacitate a 220 lb male attacker with a well-calculated strike. In contrast, a small person proficient in jiu-jitsu can easily defeat a male opponent as leverage, not strength is applied. In learning jiu-jitsu, the student is taught to apply leverage on joints and the weakest areas of the body. The opponent is forced into positions where their body is imbalanced and their strength is compromised. Jiu-jitsu is a martial art that implements grappling techniques and literally translates as “gentle art” from Japanese. It is also a much safer marital art that can be trained daily as there are no blows to the head and thus does not have the high risk of concussion like the striking based martial arts.
