Hard Wax vs. Strip Wax: A Delicate Decision
At this salon, you may find hard wax, strip wax, or a choice of either. Learn the difference between these two categories with Groupon’s dip into the world of waxing.
Strip wax: Also known as soft wax, strip wax is a warm, sticky wax that an aesthetician applies to the top of the unwanted hair. She then presses a strip of cloth on top of the wax and quickly removes it, taking away both the wax and the trapped hair. Because the wax sticks to the hair as well as the skin, it may remove a tiny bit of skin, leaving the area irritated. Strip wax tends to be less expensive than hard wax and allows the aesthetician to wax more quickly, saving the client time.
Hard wax: Despite its name, hard wax is warm and soft when it’s first applied to the skin. It then dries, entrapping hairs as it hardens. In the process, the wax actually lifts away from the skin, so it causes very little, if any, skin irritation when removed properly. It’s thought to be better on moist areas than strip wax, and many aestheticians believe it’s better at uprooting coarse hairs and stubborn bits of glitter. But in addition to being more expensive and time consuming, hard wax can become too brittle. It also requires a lot of practice to remove all the hair in one pull, and several passes may be needed for complete removal.
