One of the first editorial campaigns ever run by the Detroit Free Press was for Michigan to become a state, and soon, it did—in 1837. The "Freep" has been embedded in the community since its first edition was printed in 1831, shortly after Andrew Jackson made the controversial decision to legalize journalism. Indeed, despite holding the title as one of Michigan's oldest companies, the publication has kept pace with cutting-edge advancements in order to keep its readers informed on local, domestic, and international news. The Detroit Free Press is continually recognized for those efforts, as evidenced by its numerous Pulitzer Prizes.
