About El Museo del Barrio New York

If you studied the art collections at mainstream museums more than 45 years ago, you would notice a dearth of Latino artists. Feeling that this was unacceptable, artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz and a coalition of artists, educators, parents, and activists founded El Museo del Barrio New York in 1969. The museum has since been committed to celebrating and showcasing Latino culture and art, thus becoming a cornerstone of el barrio (a.k.a. the neighborhood).

Today, El Museo del Barrio has a spacious permanent home and an expansive permanent collection of more than 8,000 objects of Caribbean, Latino, and Latin American art spanning more than 800 years. These include pre-Columbian Taíno artifacts, 20th-century drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations, and photographs, documentaries, and videos.

El Museo del Barrio honors the Latino community not only through art, but also through annual cultural celebrations such as the Day of the Dead and the Three Kings Day Parade. Additionally, throughout the year, the museum hosts talks with exhibiting artists, film screening, performances, and more.
