Gates open at 5 p.m. for spectators, with qualifying and opening ceremony start times at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

As one of NASCAR's Home Tracks, Elko Speedway hosts the grassroots feeder races of the Whelen All-American Series. This local racing program, founded in 1982, is the breeding and training floor for future race champions and cereal endorsers. Since its inception, the series has served as a starting point for many of NASCAR's stars, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Greg Biffle, and Clint Bower, who also made up a singing pizza-delivery trio before dropping the musical aspect and focusing on their delivery-speed strengths. Local and regional hopefuls and surefuls challenge drivers from as many as 60 different tracks in two- and three-lane races on the high-banked 3/8-mile paved oval. With four racing divisions, cars range from highly modified Super Late Models with fiberglass frames or aluminum bodies to the Sportsman, which features major engine and suspension modifications, as well as factory-direct Thunder Cars and Power Stocks. Each race concludes with live music for those who miss the hip-shaking of victory dances necessarily absent when winning is exuberantly expressed in victory doughnuts and champagne baths.
