About Embodied Partner Therapy
Embodied Partner Therapy comprises the essential two phases of traditional surrogate partner therapy. Surrogate partner therapy is a somatic form of therapy designed to increase a client’s capacity for emotional and physical intimacy. It was developed by Masters and Johnson in the 1970s and uses evidence-based research to overcome challenges related to intimacy, touch, and sexuality. The client forms a therapeutic relationship with the surrogate partner to develop the skills to form a relationship with a partner out in the real world. The therapy proceeds at a pace friendly to each client’s needs, focusing on successive approximation (breaking a large goal into smaller goals) and systematic desensitization (gradually increasing levels of comfort). This experiential learning is divided into phases designed to build self-awareness and resolve deeply-ingrained issues surrounding relationships, intimacy, and sexuality. Emily works with all gender identities and sexual orientations. Clients come to resolve issues such as sexual shame, discomfort with body image, shyness, lack of experience, improving relationship skills, and connecting with the body's sensations.
