The earliest ice skating involved strapping slabs of ice to the underside of the foot and performing dance routines from Salt-n-Pepa videos. Get your ice groove on with today’s Groupon: for $5 you get all-ages admission and skate rental (up to an $11 value) for a public skating session at Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.

Housed in an 87,000-square-foot facility that serves as the official practice center for the Charlotte Checkers and is complete with an arcade, a snack bar, two NHL-regulation-sized rinks and a smaller rink known as "The Puddle," Extreme Ice Center provides a fun, family-friendly public skating atmosphere completely devoid of ice orcs. Bladers both novice and experienced can slice figure nines into screaming sheets of frozen water every day of the week; regular admission Monday through Friday is $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children, and it rises an extra hundred pence from Friday evening through Sunday. Unlike other ice arenas, the skate-rental fee ($3.50) at Extreme Ice Center includes laces. On Friday and Saturday nights, a DJ entertains ice dicers with creative tunes selected according to a complex algorithm and the Mayan calendar.

About Extreme Ice Center

Since 2006, ice-bound visitors have laced up their hockey and figure skates and shined their curling rocks before taking to the rinks at Extreme Ice Center. The center’s pair of NHL regulation-size rinks hosts public-skating sessions each day of the week, as well as private figure-skating lessons, broomball and curling matches, and USA Hockey–sanctioned programs for youths and adults. The center is the practice facility of the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers.

Off the ice, visitors will find a fitness center and ballet academy, as well as Center Ice Tavern, located between the ice rinks. It slings chicken wings, quesadillas, and draft beers to help skaters overcome the hunger developed during a multihour sit spin.
