Homebrewing dates back to the days when Mesopotamians wanted to avoid drunkenly navigating their jet skis down the Euphrates after a night at Ye Olde Sumerian Saloon. Heed historical genius with today's Groupon: for $42, you get a beer-making class at F.H. Steinbart Co. (an $85 value). Classes are currently scheduled for July 10, 16, and 23 from 12 p.m. to approximately 4 p.m., and July 27 from 4 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m.

F.H. Steinbart Co., which was founded in 1918 on the brink of Prohibition, stands as one of the nation's oldest homebrew-supply stores, hosting a knowledgeable staff with more than 100 years of combined brewing experience. Although F.H. Steinbart does offer free brewing demonstrations, their brewing classes are where the craft-curious glean thorough instruction on homebrewing. In a 3.5- to 4-hour session, students soak up the complete brewing process, witnessing the life cycle of a beer from its state as a zygotic grain to its maturation into fully-fermented, beard-growing suds. The class also introduces the palate to samples of assorted craft beers, teaching it to recognize how various ingredients affect the taste of different varieties. Although it is against the laws of state and gravity to bring fresh brews back home, F.H. Steinbart will extend a 10% discount off homebrew starter equipment on class day so that students may immediately begin to draft their own team of ale amigos.
