The Sardine Room

Oysters. New England lobsters. Fish tacos covered in jalapeño slaw. Glance up at the constantly changing chalkboard with oysters-of-the-day inside The Sardine Room, and you’ll be sure to find plenty of fresh seafood. But that’s not what inspired the restaurant’s name. The owners actually came up with it on a boat trip after deciding that the moniker best reflected the long and narrow floor-plan of the dining room and its bar.

Not that anyone’s likely to complain about squeezing into this particular sardine container. The intimate setting grants close-up views of behind the bar, where oysters stretch out on ice and bartenders mix craft cocktails. They also feature a seasonal menu based around contemporary small plates, including Iberico pork collar, pressed lamb shoulder, and duck sausage.

Compari’s on the Park

Tradition defines Compari’s on the Park, a neighborhood eatery with lively ambiance rated as having one of the top 25 pizzas in Detroit by the Detroit Free Press. Each morning, chefs arrive at the Italian restaurant to stoke the flames of its brick oven and follow recipes that stretch back for generations. The most popular of these are square deep-dish pizzas, which chefs make from scratch and cover in toppings that range from pineapple and ham to spinach and feta. Breadsticks, calzones, and other Italian specialties emerge from the same oven. Homemade pasta dishes like lasagna and tortelloni round out the menu. Michigan beers and international wines complement the food once it arrives in the dining room, where a brick wall hosts a mural of a giant can of Italian tomatoes.
