Way-too-deep-sea fishing was deemed a failure because the never-ending lines would sink straight through the peanut-brittley ocean bottom and become lodged in the giant taffy ball at the earth's core. Stick to tried-and-true angling with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a four-hour reef drift trip with Fishing Headquarters (a $30 value based on online coupon). Trips launch off daily at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from the heart of Ft. Lauderdale Beach.
A reef drift fishing trip provides four hours of all-inclusive open-sea entertainment for fishing fanatics and uninitiated land lovers alike. Aboard the 85-foot Catch My Drift party fishing boat, poled persons will soar out about a mile offshore to the edge of the Gulf Stream in pursuit of kingfish, snappers, groupers, and the occasional boot full of narrative treasures. All rods, reels, bait, and licenses are included, and laid-back bunches are free to tote tackleboxes of adult beverages and all-ages snacks, such as cookies shaped like 401ks, if desired.
On board, the professional and courteous crew will handle all the navigating, fish finding, and troubleshooting, including the complimentary cleaning of any dinner-portioned catches (though tips are always appreciated). Passengers can come along in pursuit of the big ones or simply lounge around the sun deck and air-conditioned cabin complete with dinettes and bench seating. The captain recommends at least one day's notice for all reservations, so phone ahead, bring a camera, and eat plenty of pretzels in preparation for salty seas and rod handling.
Customers bringing alcoholic beverages may bring beer or wine in cans or plastic containers only. No hard alcohol allowed. Passengers under 4 will only be allowed out on a calm day. The boat is wheelchair accessible, although the weight must be kept low since chairs will need to be lifted aboard.
Reviews
Google Mappers give Fishing Headquarters an average of 4.5 stars, and four Citysearchers award the business a perfect five stars:
- They are always professional and friendly with me and my guests that I bring fishing with me. Their boats are the cleanest charter boats I've been on and I always have a good time fishing with them. We usually have a great catch with them and even when we don't I still enjoy spending the day on the water with these guys. – power, Google Maps
- The boat was great, ice cold a/c, very comfortable and they provided everything for us. – Jtea, Citysearch

About Fishing Headquarters
Just a mile into the waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach, the currents churn with migrating kingfish, tuna, marlin, sharks, and other fauna. With 40 years of experience on this crowded expanse of slate blue, Paul Roydhouse knows how to catch them. Aboard their 85-foot boat, he and his crew lead trip groups in drift fishing, a method that entails letting the boat float with the wind and current like a depressed seagull. They load up the drift-fishing vessel or a 48-foot sport-fishing boat with everything from bait and tackle to licenses and rods. Passengers cast lines from fighting chairs, buckling themselves in to battle mahi-mahi and sailfish in jeweled veils of spray. On the Mary B III, up to 50 patrons sprawl in the sunshine, clicking together beers brought from home; chartered vessels also can slip through the water toward the Bahamas. During nighttime swordfish cruises, Paul and his crew shut off the engines, letting lines baited with squid and glow sticks hang in the dark until the massive fish grab them and thrash through the water.
