Historical Boutique Hotel in Rejuvenated Greensboro
When Elon University’s School of Law opened in 2006, it helped inject a youthful vibe into downtown Greensboro. Nightclubs, bars, and restaurants have flooded into the neighborhood, and they've complemented some of the old-fashioned buildings in the city—many of which have been standing for more than 100 years.
Biltmore Greensboro Hotel is one of those old buildings that has remained as the city has changed over the century, and the hotel still exudes an Old-World glamour. In keeping with the times, though, the hotel has also gotten a full remodeling of its own.
Antique wooden furniture gleams amid hundreds of books on built-in shelves in the hotel's elegant lobby. Upstairs, the hotel’s rooms are modeled in the romantic English homestead tradition, marked by vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, canopied four-poster beds, and fire-escape instructions written in iambic pentameter. Rooms have since been outfitted with modern amenities such as WiFi and cable television.
Piedmont Triad, North Carolina: Historical Museums and Furniture Boutiques
Three cities form North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad: Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Each city is no more than 30 miles from the others, so it's easy to get around to see the history and culture each town has to offer. In Greensboro in 1960, students from North Carolina A&T staged a sit-in protest at the lunch counter of a Woolworth's department store to protest racial segregation. The action started a chain reaction of protests across the South. Today, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum stands in place of the original Woolworth's counter.
In Winston-Salem, the historical district of Old Salem is lined with 18th-century Moravian buildings. Here, costumed interpreters from the Old Salem Museum help kids to write with quills or try scherenschnitte, German paper cutting, on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Nearby High Point is known for its high-end furniture makers. The first furniture shop opened in the late 19th century, and showrooms still line Main Street today alongside boutiques and Victorian manors.
