Spacious Suites Close to Airport and Universities
One of America’s great academic hubs is the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina, where the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State form and area known as the Research Triangle. Located within a half-hour drive of all three universities, DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Raleigh-Durham is the perfect base for touring a campus or cheering on your alma mater at a football or basketball game. The hotel even offers a complimentary shuttle to take you to and from nearby Raleigh-Durham International Airport. And since all of the DoubleTree’s guest rooms are suites, you’ll have two spacious rooms to stretch out in, plus a kitchenette with a microwave and refrigerator.
Upon checking in, you’ll receive one of DoubleTree’s signature warm chocolate-chip cookies. In the morning, head downstairs for breakfast at the onsite Piney Point Grill and Seafood for a power breakfast of french toast, eggs, sausage, biscuits, bacon, and coffee. The restaurant also features a bar with a large television that’s usually showing the big game. For a little recreation, guests can borrow a paddleboat and explore the property’s private lake, or wander the walking trails that twist around the lush property.
Durham, North Carolina: Academia and Southern Cuisine in the Research Triangle
With Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State all within close proximity, Durham and the surrounding area is often called the Research Triangle. Just five minutes from the hotel is Research Triangle Park, where IBM, Cisco, Credit Suisse, and about 170 other companies have offices.
Thanks in part to the large international student population, it's not hard to find ethnic restaurants in the area. The college atmosphere also lends itself to several local microbreweries. And while you’re here, be sure to try Carolina-style barbecue, best known for its vinegar-infused sauce.
There are several art galleries and museums here as well. In Durham, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University promotes the visual arts with exhibits of ancient Peruvian burial masks and large-scale collages by Mark Bradford. The North Carolina Museum of Art’s collection includes European, African, and American works, with a special exhibit focusing on the French sculptor Auguste Rodin.
