Northwoods-Style Suites Above Massive Indoor Water Park

High above Fort Mackenzie—a four-story waterlogged treehouse that recalls the Swiss Family Robinson and Pirates of the Caribbean with its swinging cargo nets, suspension bridges, and treetop slides—a 1,000-gallon bucket slowly fills with water. Suddenly, the bucket topples, drenching adventurers gathered below in a torrent of water. This splash-filled attraction joins more than 10 others at Great Wolf Lodge Kansas City’s indoor water park, including several tunnel slides, the Crooked Creek lazy river, and the 122,000-gallon outdoor Thunder Bay pool.

The 38,000-square-foot, 84-degree aquatic arena is merely one of the many activities the hotel offers. During the MagiQuest live-action adventure, kids wield magic wands and journey through a kingdom to meet mythical creatures, including a pixie, a dragon, and a Bob Dylan. Howl in One mini golf pits players against lifelike beavers, ball-gobbling fish, and levitating greens, and Scooops Kid Spa’s staffers dole out manicures, pedicures, and free ice cream to pintsize patrons sitting atop ice-cream-cone stools and banana-split thrones.

Six children and adults can comfortably slumber in a Loft Fireplace suite or a Majestic Bear suite and plan daily itineraries in the separate living area or around the kitchen’s breakfast bar.

Kansas City: Barbecue, Fountains, and Major League Soccer

Great Wolf Lodge sits next to the thunderous Kansas Speedway, host of two stock-car-race weekends a year as well as the brand-new Livestrong Sporting Park, home of the high-flying Sporting Kansas City Major League Soccer team. Guests can easily walk or not as easily somersault from the hotel to either location.

Just 15 miles east lies Kansas City, Missouri. The “world’s barbecue capital” is stocked with more than 100 barbecue joints that serve traditional slow-smoked meats and fish. Burnt ends, the crispy tips of a brisket, are a noted regional delicacy. Most locals prefer to wash up after a saucy dinner by splashing around in 1 of more than 200 fountains, a number that places Kansas City in the same watery pantheon as Rome.
