Quaint B&B Helmed by Renowned Chef
As cliché as it might sound, guests at The Red Hook Country Inn really do eat like royalty. In a culinary career that has taken Nabil Ayoub across Europe and parts of the Middle East, the chef has cooked for the likes of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Princess Margaret of Great Britain. Ayoub and wife Patricia Holden center their inn on the fine-dining experience, but not at the expense of a cozy B&B feel. The nine-room inn is tucked into the Hudson Valley, where it's surrounded by small farms and the rolling Catskill and Berkshire Mountains.
Chef Ayoub prepares four-course prix fixe dinners ($59–$79/person) on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as midweek during peak season. Feasts begin with a soup du jour and a Mediterranean salad followed by a choice of entree, which might include slow-braised lamb shank, salmon fillet, or chicken veronique. Desserts are nothing short of decadent: rich spoonfuls of bread pudding made with Jameson Irish whiskey share the table with buttery helpings of baklava delivered from Greece by Hermes.
With plates polished and bellies filled, you can retreat to guest rooms accented with fresh flowers and chocolates. The Queen Anne and Afterglow premium rooms feature whirlpool tubs and fireplaces, both of which are good spots to enjoy the included wine, cheese, and fruit platter. Each morning, the aromas of Turkish coffee signal the start of breakfast, which also includes fresh eggs, tea, juice, and baked goods.
Red Hook, New York: Historical Towns in Scenic Hudson Valley
The village of Red Hook lies in the heart of the Hudson Valley, near meandering hiking paths and colonial-era towns dotted with antique stores. Along the Dutchess Wine Trail—a short drive connecting two local wineries—scenes of yesteryear unfold along the road. Horse and dairy farms are bordered by ponds, woodlands, and winding streams.
Included with this Groupon are two tickets to the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, located in nearby Hyde Park. Here you can tour the first presidential library and stroll through gardens and along trails lining the 300-acre estate. Art lovers, meanwhile, will want to tour the home of Hudson River school painter Frederic Church. Known as Olana, the Persian-style estate sits on 250 acres overlooking the Catskill, Berkshire, and Taconic Mountains—peaks that frequently appear in Church’s landscape paintings.
