Akumal, Mexico: Beautiful Beaches, Mayan Ruins, and Nesting Sea Turtles

Located about an hour south of Cancun, Akumal rests on the Yucatan Peninsula alongside the Caribbean Sea. The town’s three bays—Half Moon, Great Akumal, and Aventuras—draw sunbathers, snorkelers, scuba divers, and upmarket sandcastle developers. It’s also a hot spot for nesting turtles. In fact, the town’s Mayan-derived name, Akumal, translates to “the Place of the Turtles.” The creatures can be spotted year-round in the bays.

The Mayan ruins at Tulum, thought to have been constructed as early as the 13th century, lie just 9 miles from the resort. Set atop cliffs nearly 40 feet high, Tulum once served as a trading center. The tallest building, El Castillo, was a lighthouse where torches were used to help canoes to avoid the reef. The ruins are fascinating, but you should show up early to beat the tour buses.
