Zipline tours are a great way to experience the jungle and to see wildlife like howler monkeys. The Mombacho and Masaya coastal volcanoes are just 90 minutes north of Tola. Though the 4,000-foot Mombacho is dormant, one of the Masaya craters still emits smoke and gas. Head east across the Rivas Isthmus to explore the Wildlife Reserve Río Escalante-Chacocente. Every year between July and December, thousands of turtles return to the sand here to lay their eggs.
