Tola, Nicaragua: Undisturbed Tropical Wildlife and Secluded Beaches
The beaches lining Nicaragua’s southeastern coast have earned this region the nickname “Emerald Coast.” You’ll find everything from wild, craggy shores to pink- and white-sand beaches ideal for swimming. Fishing is popular here, too—head to the neighboring village of El Gigante to snag sailfish, wahoo, or tuna on a fishing charter (you might spot dolphins along the way).
Located a few miles inland, the town of Tola is a gateway to eco-adventures in Nicaragua’s dense tropical forests. Zipline tours are a great way to experience the jungle and to see wildlife like howler monkeys. The Mombacho and Masaya coastal volcanoes are just 90 minutes north of Tola. Though the 4,000-foot Mombacho is dormant, one of the Masaya craters still emits smoke and gas. Head east across the Rivas Isthmus to explore the Wildlife Reserve Río Escalante-Chacocente. Every year between July and December, thousands of turtles return to the sand here to lay their eggs.
