Family-Friendly Lodge Along Big Bear Lake near Skiing and Watersports
Big Bear Lake Front Lodge is set along the shores of California’s Big Bear Lake, where the San Bernardino Mountains make an imposing backdrop and the sun shines about 300 days a year (Frommer’s says the weather is “always nearly perfect”). Guests of the lodge can take advantage of the pleasant climate by spending their days fishing and jet-skiing. There are also two ski resorts about 10 minutes away: Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Mountain Resort.
Inside the lodge, guestrooms reflect the woodsy setting with cozy fireplaces and quilts adorned with images of bears, moose, and wolves. Kitchen suites feature fully stocked kitchens, and lakefront suites look out on the water and the San Bernardino Mountains. You can go fishing off the resort’s pier, have a cookout in the shaded picnic area, or simply lounge on the redwood deck.

From Los Angeles, Big Bear Lake is accessed via a picturesque two-hour drive through the San Bernardino Mountains. In winter, skiers and snowboarders head to Bear Mountain, which spans 750 acres and four mountain peaks. The park also includes a freestyle area with more than 100 jumps and Red Bull Plaza, where snowboarders can grind through a replicated downtown setting.
Warmer months are ideal for fishing in the freshwater lake or taking a paddlewheel boat tour. Hike the surrounding mountain trails to spot bald eagles, which are indigenous to the area.
Big Bear’s downtown area recalls an alpine village with its tree-lined streets and Bavarian-style buildings that house bistros, ice cream parlors, and trading posts. Just outside town, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo rehabilitates orphaned and injured animals including black bears, foxes, and porcupines.
