Sprawling Resort with Horseback Riding and Award-Winning Spa
Cerulean skies, gently sloping foothills, and fragrant piñon pines cover the landscape at The Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa, just a 10-minute drive from central Santa Fe. You might recognize this setting from the 2009 film Crazy Heart, which stars Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The crew spent nine days filming on the 450-acre resort amid molten sunsets and northwestern views of the Jemez Mountains.
It's a picturesque landscape that looks great on screen but even better in person, and the resort gives its guests myriad ways to explore the area up close. Through the concierge, you can book guided horseback-riding tours through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains or try your hand at the skeet-shooting range. Kids aged 5–11 can attend Camp Appaloosa, where they engage in age-appropriate activities such as swimming, pony rides, and swimming with ponies. At SháNah Spa, specialists perform blue-corn body scrubs and other traditional Native American treatments; they even deliver therapeutic massages in an authentic outdoor tepee. Certain options on this Getaway include a $100 resort credit, which you can apply toward horseback riding, tennis lessons, skeet shooting, Camp Appaloosa, or spa treatments.
At Las Fuentes Restaurant & Bar, Executive Chef Christopher McLean prepares seared rabbit, Chimayo chili-glazed duck, and other southwestern specialties using ingredients sourced from New Mexico. The onsite restaurant also features a breakfast menu of traditional and Tex-Mex dishes.
The resort's two-story adobe lodges resemble the pueblo-style architecture found throughout Santa Fe. Inside, deluxe guest rooms feature sitting rooms centered around wood-burning kiva fireplaces. Throughout The Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa, you’ll also find eco-friendly measures in place, including onsite water reclamation and sustainable gardening practices.
Santa Fe, New Mexico: Historical State Capital Rich in Culture and Art
According to Fodor’s, the Santa Fe “brim[s] with reminders of nearly four centuries of Spanish and Mexican rule, and of the Pueblo cultures that have been here for hundreds more.” This unique history is especially apparent in the Plaza, a central downtown hangout. Originally home to the Pueblo Indian village of Ogapogee, the area was colonized by Spaniards in 1598 and later served as a Mexican capital city. Today, the Plaza displays a rich tapestry of these varied cultures with its traditional adobe architecture, historical monuments, and the New Mexico History Museum, home to New Mexico’s first printing press.
Modern-day Santa Fe is perhaps best known as a center for culture and art. The city attracts artists and art lovers alike with its striking scenery, art galleries, and events such as the Indian Market, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors each August. Travelers seeking culture can check out the Santa Fe Opera, which holds performances each July and August in an open-air adobe amphitheater.

About The Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa
Fragrant piñon pines and vibrant yellow chamisal bushes rustle in the breeze on the slopes of the Little Tesuque Valley. Horses trot by, scaling both gentle and rugged territory. Bishop's Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa builds on a history stretching back to the early 1900s, when a French bishop erected the site's first lodge and planted its first fruit trees. Now the resort stretches out over 15 lodge buildings filled with deluxe and standard suites and those accessible to guests with disabilities. Many of the suites are named for local flora and freshwater marshes vital to the local ecosystem. The central lodge still shows its origins as an adobe carriage house, and the north and south lodges blend Southwestern and Midwestern with some rooms bedecked in crown molding and others with exposed ceiling beams. The resort's views and architecture even made it an appropriate setting for the film Crazy Heart.
Each day guests can take advantage of guided morning, afternoon, and sunset horseback rides along trails through the Sangre de Cristo mountains and lessons in Western riding style. Children of various ages also explore the outdoors in summer adventure camps. Therapists in an onsite spa slough off wilderness stressors, and a partnership with the Santa Fe Opera lets guests watch and listen as classical singers croon before lavish sets in an outdoor amphitheater. Onsite restaurants contribute to the hotel's environmentally friendly mission as culinary crews prepare their dishes using ranch-grown fruits and vegetables, practice water conservation, and let spatulas roam free-range.
