Chicago's Magnificent Mile: Upscale Boutiques and Historic Architecture

On Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, landmark skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Center and the Wrigley Building tower over the city's liveliest retail corridor. In total, this stretch of high-end real estate houses some 460 stores, ranging from exclusive designers such as Armani and Chanel to beloved brands including Apple, American Girl, and Gap. Double-decker buses and horse-drawn carriages circle the Chicago Water Tower, a limestone icon that survived the Great Chicago Fire, and droves of shoppers navigate eight levels of boutiques and cafés at the nearby Water Tower Place.

Lake Shore Drive runs two blocks east of Michigan Avenue. Travel + Leisure calls this stretch “the greatest architecture road on earth” thanks to the superstar skyscrapers lined up along the lakefront. The adjoining Lakefront Trail draws runners and cyclists year-round. Just a mile and a half north, North Avenue Beach is a summer hotspot for volleyball, people-watching, and live music at beachfront bars. A short bus ride away, Museum Campus features the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum—three must-see cultural gems. You can get to the beach (and practically anywhere else in the city) using Chicago's extensive public transportation system.

An Out-of-Body Hospitality Experience! In today’s fast-paced world, truly exceptional service feels rare—but our recent experience with the AC Hotel Chicago Downtown proved otherwise. As we prepare for our group’s upcoming stay next month, we reached out to the property for some practical information. While the hotel doesn’t have a concierge, we were incredibly lucky to connect with the Uber-Fantastic Front Desk Supervisor, Emily. Emily went above and beyond answering every question with professionalism, warmth, and genuine pleasure. Her attention to detail and positive energy completely blew us away. It wasn’t just helpful; it was memorable. We’ve always appreciated the amazing staff at this property—Vee, Kimm, Lissett from Sales, and so many others who consistently deliver with kindness and efficiency. But experiencing Emily’s stellar service was a powerful reminder that this hotel isn’t just about clean rooms, great food, and prime location—it’s the true definition of GREAT HOSPITALITY. Can’t wait to be back soon!

Great Family stay !!!! My family recently spent several nights at the AC Hotel for a large family event, booking three separate rooms. From the moment we texted our request to have the rooms together, the front desk team was incredibly helpful. When we arrived, the check-in experience was just as great—the staff was friendly, welcoming, and had arranged for all three rooms to be in a quiet area of the hotel, which we truly appreciated. As a Lifetime Gold Bonvoy member, I’m often surprised by how many hotels no longer offer fresh coffee in the mornings, so it was a pleasant surprise to not only have coffee available but also fruit and pastries—a thoughtful touch. All three rooms were spotless and spacious, and the housekeeping staff was wonderful, greeting us each morning with kindness. After staying at many different hotels in Chicago, my family has officially found our new favorite. Thank you for a fantastic stay! We look forward to returning.

Disappointing The location of the hotel is the only benefit. We had a multitude of issues with our stay. Upon arrival, the room smelled strongly of marijuana (blended with Febreeze, likely used to try and mask the smell) and there were a bunch of hairs in the bathtub. There was a loud air vent right outside our door that never stopped making noise. The group in the room adjoined to ours was incredibly loud blasting music late at night and it took security 30 minutes to come when we called to report them. The marijuana smell continued to return in our bathroom throughout our stay, prompting us to assume it was coming either from the adjacent stairwell or through the vents - a pervasive issue. The "lounge" is not a concierge lounge / M Club, but just a paid bar with a microwave. At checkout, we had a strange charge on our bill from the bar. I informed the front desk that we did not ever get anything from the bar and wanted the charge removed...they told me they would have to investigate and get back to me. They found a receipt where someone put my room number and scribbled a random signature. With great difficulty, I finally convinced them it was not us and they removed the charge. Would have happily reviewed the security footage with them to prove it was not us if needed, but what happened to "the customer is always right"? As a titanium guest (& platinum for life), I was really grossed out and disappointed by my stay here and would not stay here again. It gives the vibe of a budget hotel. With SO many hotels in the immediate area, including many other far superior Marriotts with great rates, no reason to put up with any of this.
