Honolulu, HI: Where History Meets Island Majesty

Honolulu, the vibrant capital of Hawaii, stands as a testament to the islands' rich cultural heritage and pivotal role in Pacific history. Once the seat of Hawaiian royalty, this coastal metropolis blends the grandeur of ancient Polynesian traditions with the dynamic pulse of a modern urban center. The iconic Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil, echoes the kingdom’s regal past, while the historic district of downtown Honolulu reveals the layered narratives of missionaries, merchants, and monarchs who shaped the city’s destiny. Beyond its historical landmarks, Honolulu remains a strategic crossroads of the Pacific, its deep harbor and storied naval presence marking it as a global hub of commerce and defense.

Honolulu's natural beauty is as legendary as its history. Diamond Head, the towering volcanic crater, guards the city’s southern shores, offering breathtaking panoramic views from its summit. Waikiki Beach, once the exclusive retreat of Hawaiian royalty, now welcomes visitors from around the world to its golden sands and rolling surf. Yet, beyond the glitz of Waikiki, the island’s spirit thrives in the verdant valleys of Manoa, the sacred waters of Hanauma Bay, and the solemn grounds of Pearl Harbor. Here, the past and present converge, reminding all who visit that Honolulu is not just a paradise—it is a place of resilience, cultural richness, and enduring Aloha.

Disgraceful treatment of paying guests Given three incorrect meeting places for "free shuttle" that necesitated an hours wait to be pucked up, 3 phone calls & still driver drove right past us! Then had audacity to expect a $ tip per bag!!!! In the hotel's restaurant.  We had to wait some considerable time to be attended to, we ended up seating ourselves, getting our own menus and water, whilst the sole server juggled his other responsibilities. After a very ordinary fish & chips meal, with the thinnest fries we've ever seen & non existent service, we received a bill for the equivalent of AUD $90 to which not only had a 4% kitchen charge been added but additionally a further 18% service charge. Neither the meal or service justified this charge in any way. We left what we considered to be a fair and reasonable payment which more than covered the cost. For the AUD$ 75 cost we could have fed four people with a far better quality meal! As we had been unable to use our drinks voucher in the restaurant, after the meal we went to the bar in the same hotel to use our vouchers to get a drink. Whilst there a very disgruntled server from the restaurant and some ransom woman from the bar came and accosted us, snatching a jam jar of tap water we had brought round with us to finish at the bar! We were basically accused of stealing a jam jar of tap water whilst sitting at a bar in the exact same hotel, as paying guests! We brought this disgraceful behaviour towards paying guests to the front desk staff who were equally appalled at this atrocious behaviour towards their paying guests!

Decent for One Night This hotel is located very close to the airport and gets the job done. It is dated but clean. The airport shuttle is helpful though was very late when we needed to use it. The only real issue is that you can hear everything in the hallway - not great for light sleepers.

Thanks, but wouldn’t stay again unless desperate. Had a one night stay between flights and stayed at this hotel hoping to save the cost of a taxi/uber from a downtown or beach hotel. The rooms are dated and need of refurbishment, but serve their purpose. Beds are reasonably comfortable, the air conditioning has a soothing rattle that slightly dims out the freeway noise until the clunk when it stops. There is limited water pressure in the shower but the temperature is hot. Not sure what the go is with the shower over the half bath. Doesn’t seem to serve a purpose other than create a hazard trying to get in and out of it. Lunch with two drinks cost around $US100, it was nice for what it was, but expensive. Had snacks from the shop for dinner as a result. Service was good which may have been due to being the only people there at the time. Breakfast was included but choices were extremely limited and portion sizes non existant compared to the ‘regular’ menu. Options such as juice costs extra. We couldn’t seem to be able redeem the drink vouchers that were given to us. First because they could only be used in one restaurant not the other and then only for particular beverages - all too hard in the end so completely pointless. There is an additional resort fee for things that are usually included in other hotels such as wifi and a pool. The ‘courtesy’ shuttle to the terminal is included in the resort fee, but only runs on the hour between certain times and then you are expected to pay a gratuity to the driver on top of the fee. How many times can you be charged for the same thing! Convenient place to stay between flights given the proximity to the airport, but way over priced for what it is and the added extras aren’t justifiable in my opinion. Would try somewhere else next time or not bother and take a different flight or route to avoid the overlay.

Decent hotel for price. It was decent for what we needed and price. Staff was very friendly. Room was clean. Bathroom on the small side but good enough. There was counter space. Shower head was kind of low so taller people will have to bend. Water pressure was good. Water heated pretty quickly. Parking is gated so somewhat secure. No view but I don't care. Restaurant in property was good. Really friendly service. Food was ok. I had prime rib. They have an airport shuttle. It'll do if you have an early flight.

Room fine but beware of additional charges. We reserved a room in advance. The price on the hotel website was $137.40 plus taxes: 17.962% (10.25% Hawaii TAT, 3% Oahu TAT, 4.712% GET) However beware. They advertise Free Wifi and Complimentary Airport Shuttle on the website. But on checki-n I was charged an additional $29.49 ($25+tax) "Resort/Amenities" charge for the Wifi and Shuttle. This felt like a rip-off.
